The project team met the local community at the Opening Public Participation Day on 18 May 2022 to gain an insight into their flood experiences, concerns and suggestions. This is the first of three public consultation days planned for the project, and the inaugural event at Áras Beanntraí was very well attended. Presentations by the design consultants explained the background to the project and the general approach that will be taken in determining the best solutions for Bantry.
Cork County Council provided information about advance works that have occurred for effective flood management including mobile pumps, valves on drainage systems, rain gauges and tidal gauges, surveys of culverts, Invasive species surveys and a programme for temporary Individual Property Protection Measures.
On the day, information was gathered from those in attendance through conversations and written responses to questionnaires. Questionnaires were made available on the project website and responses after the event were collected at the County Council offices. Emails from those who could not attend are also being taken into consideration. Information presented at the event is available on the project website www.bantryfrs.ie.
