Individual Property Protection Scheme Update

29/05/2025

Cork County Council in collaboration with the OPW has been progressing a scheme to provide Individual Property Protection (IPP), commonly referred to as floodgates, to properties identified as being most at risk of flooding in Bantry. The scheme involves the supply and installation of bespoke floodgates and is being completed in a number of separate phases.

Phase 1 of the scheme has now reached completion and includes the installation of expandable and demountable barriers which will  provide some flood mitigation for 20 individual properties. Examples of the barriers that have been installed are included below.

On the 14th of April 2025, the OPW approved funding for a project cost of €78,785.56 to progress Phase 2 of the IPP Scheme which will provide protection to a further 28 properties (51 No. doors). Documentation for progressing this scheme is currently being prepared and tenders will be invited to complete the works in the coming month.
